How many women are out there?
Women in games is already a readily accepted idea in several countries, like the US and the UK, and maybe Scandinavia, and female presence at production level is no longer a marginal phenomenon. However, in many European countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Czech Republic, France, and Austria, women participating in gaming culture are virtually invisible.
Factory Girl believes there must be other women out there, who might feel isolated within an all-male gaming community and who would benefit from participating in a community tailored to their interests. They might be beginners, independent developers, or professionals working in a number of unmapped territories.
Our goal is to offer visibility to these women through the creation of a database of women working, studying, or simply very interested in games, multimedia and new technologies at all levels of design, creation, consumption, distribution, and research.
We hope this database will allow us to better understand the reality of women in games within Europe, and will enable professional women to connect and exchange ideas and opinions with other professional women, with the goal of revealing unexplored aspects of games and gaming.
